namam no. 345) Sataavartah (शतावर्तः) (శ్శతావర్తః)

aum Sataavartaaya namah (ओं शतावरताय नमः) (ఓం శతావర్తాయ నమః)

Sata = one hundred; aavarta = whirlpool

The word Sata suggests here not just one hundred, but many, several.

Whirlpools are deeper at some places, and at some other places they can be seen on the surface. When a fast flood flows between two mounds, the whirlpools are formed due to the narrowness of the stream. Such whirlpools are aavartaas in sanskrit.

In the same manner, the glory, beauty, prosperity, courage, character, and so many other divine attributes of the lord are embedded in Him in different avataars. However, at times, they do come on to the surface just like the whirlpools. Since He has so many of them, He is called Sataavartah.

aum namo bhagavate vasudevaya!
