------------------------------------------------------------------
This 17th sloka of VSNS has 12 names of lord Vishnu presented in it. The names and their meanings are presented below:

153) upendrah (उपेन्द्रः) (ఉపేంద్రః)
154) vaamanah (वामनः) (వామనః)
155) praamSuh (प्रांशुः) (ప్రాంశుః)
156) amoghah (अमोघः) (అమోఘః)
157) Suchih (सुचिः) (శ్శుచిః)
158) Urjitah (ऊर्जितः) (ఊర్జితః)
159) ateendrah (अतीन्द्रः) (అతీంద్రః)
160) ssangrahah (सॅंग्रह) (స్సంగ్రః)
161) ssargah (स्सर्गः) (స్సర్గః)
162) dhritaatmaa (धृतात्मा) (ధృతాత్మా)
163) niyamah (नियमाः) (నియమః)
164) yamah (यमः) (యమః)

nama no. 153) upendrah (उपेन्द्रः) (ఉపేంద్రః)
om upendraaya namah  (ओं उपेन्द्राय नमः)  (ఓం ఉపేంద్రాయ నమః)
He is called upendrah as He was the last of the children of Aditi and younger brother of Indra.

The vishnu avatar was considered to be that of the one born as last of Aditi's children. There were 12 children of Aditi. Indra and others. Lord Vishnu was the 12th of them.

Based on the character and traits, He is superior to all of them. That's why all the lokas depend on Him. This nama also highlights that though he was born as younger brother of India, He became the one who protected them without losing His influence.

nama no. 154) vaamanah (वामनः) (వామనః)
om vaamanaya namah  (ओं वामनाय नमः)  (ఓం వామనాయ నమః)
As He appeared as the dwarf brahmachari, in order to protect the authority of Indra, during the yagya performed by the emperor Bali, He is said to be vaamanah.

nama no) 155) praamSuh (प्रांशुः) (ప్రాంశుః)
om praamSave namah  (ओं प्रांशवे नमः)  (ఓం ప్రాంశవే నమః)
That vaamana is also called praamSuh. It means that He is the one who expanded everywhere and also the best of all. The vaamana grew in size the moment the water of donation (daan-jal) fell in his hand.

The word praamSu indicates growth.

nama no) 156) amoghah (अमोघः) (అమోఘః)
om amoghaaya namah  (ओं अमोघाय नमः)  (ఓం అమోఘాయ నమః)
This nama amoghah means that any work carried out by the swamy will not go waste.

mogha = wasteful; amogha = one that does not go waste

This is the great thing about the vaamanavatar. No one lost anything due to this avatar. It resulted in joy for both the parties (devatas and asuras). Bali got not only a good name and fame but also stayed on earth till manyantara and enjoyed all the joys of life. The devatas and Indra also regained their lost power and authority.

nama no) 157) Suchih (शुचिः) (శుచిః)
om Suchaye namah  (ओं शुचये  नमः)  (ఓం శుచయే నమః)
Thus He is called Suchih as He did not have any blemish of expecting favors in return from all those to whom He had done a lot of good. He is clean and pure.

He is the husband of goddess Lakshmi. He is the cause of the whole universe. Still, without caring for His identity and also not worrying about the insult of begging, He appeared as vaamana for the greater good of both Bali and Indra; but did not expect to get anything in return from either of them.

That's why He is called Suchih.

nama no) 158) Urjitah (ऊर्जितः) (ఊర్జితః)
om Urjitaaya namah  (ओं उर्जिताय  नमः)  (ఓం ఊర్జితాయ నమః)
He is called Urjitahas as He had the strength required to control and conquer the enemies. In Vamana avatar, when Namuchi and other warrior supporters of Bali prepared to retaliate, He overcame them without getting any perturbed. This word urjita attributes to such a strength of Vishnu.

nama no. 159) ateendrah (अतीन्द्रः) (అతీంద్రః)
om ateendraaya namah  (ओं अतीन्द्राय नमः)  (ఓం అతీంద్రాయ నమః)
Though He was born as younger brother of Indra, He was superior to him in terms of aishwarya and capabilities to do. That's why He is called ateendrah.

Swamy Vishnu is called ateendra as He possesses aishwarya that is stable and valour that is truthful.

160) sangrahah (सॅंग्रह) (సంగ్రహః)
om  sangrahaaya namah  (ओं संग्रहाय नमः)  (ఓం సంగ్రహాయ నమః)
He is called sangraha as He has been accepted and received as the lord - the swamy.

In vaamana avatar, though no one asked for it, He has blessed one and all with the touch of His feet (sripaada sparsha). This avatar reflected the love and gentleness of swamy as that of a mother's soft touch to a new-born baby.

161) ssargah (स्सर्गः) (స్సర్గః)
om sargaaya namah  (ओं सर्गाय नमः)  (ఓం సర్గాయ నమః)
He is called sargaha as He took the avatar of vaamana to bless one and all with the touch of his feet by way of measuring the whole universe with just 3 feet.

It only highlights that the purpose of vaamana avatar of lord Vishnu is to benefit the world.

162) dhritaatmaa (धृतात्मा) (ధృతాత్మా)
om dhritaatmane namah  (ओं धृतात्मने नमः)  (ఓం ధృతాత్మనే నమః)
Thus, as He protected all by donating them their aatmaas, He is called dhritaatmaa.

Here the word aatmadaan does not refer to the surrender of devotees to Him. Rather, it suggests that lord Vishnu has given everything to them.

163) niyamah (नियमाः) (నియమః)
om  niyamaaya  namah  (ओं नियमाय नमः)  (ఓం నియమాయ నమః)
He is called niyamah as He established even those that were present on the opponents' side like the emperor Bali and others - meaning that He brought them under His control.

Who has such an ability to see that those who have rivalry from birth itself do not oppose each other? That is possible only for the paramaatma. Emperor Bali belonged to asuras - the rakshasa creed. The rivalry between the devas and asuras is quite natural. That's why, Bali captured the power of Indra and troubled the devas by becoming the emperor for all the 3 lokas. To who else it is possible other than lord Vishnu to subdue him through peaceful means and still make him not to feel bitter about it?

164) yamah (यमः) (యమః)
om  yamaaya namah  (ओं यमाय नमः)  (ఓం యమాయ నమః)
The earlier nama 'niyamah' has revealed the ability of lord vishnu to have control even on the uncontrollable people. This nama yamah also reveals his ability to keep all the living beings within their limits without allowing them to cross their boundaries.

om namo naraayanaaya!
