SLOKA NO. 14. Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama Stotram


om namo bhagavate vaasudevaaya.

sarvaga ssarvavidbhaanuh vishvakseno janaardhanah | 
vedo vedavidavyango vedaango vedavitkavih ||
सर्वाग स्सर्वविद्भानुः विष्वक्सेनो जनार्धनः | 
वेदो वेदविदव्यंगो वेदांगों वेदवित्कविः ||
సర్వగ స్సర్వవిద్భానుః విష్వక్సేనో జనార్ధనః | 
వేదో వేదవిదవ్యంగో వేదంగో వేదవిత్కవిః ||

This 14th sloka of VSNS has 11 names of lord Vishnu presented in it. They are listed below: 

124) sarvagah (सर्वगः) (సర్వగః)
125) sarvavit (सर्ववित) (సర్వవిత్)  
126) bhaanuh (भानुः) (భానుః)
127) vishvaksenah (विष्वक्सेनः) (విష్వక్సేనః)
128) janaardhanah (जनार्धनः) (జనార్ధనః)
129) vedah (वेदः) (వేదః)
130) vedavit (वेदवित) (వేదవిత్)
131) avyangah (अव्यंगाः) (అవ్యంగః)
132) vedaangah (वेदांगः) (వేదాంగః)
133) vedavit kavih (वेदवित) (వేదవిత్)
134) vedavit kavih (कविः) (కవిః)

Their meanings are presented below:

nama no. 124) sarvagah (सर्वगः) (సర్వగః)
om sarvagaaya namah  (ओं सर्वगाय नमः)  (ఓం సర్వగాయ నమః)
Strength is the main trait required for holding the whole universe that is withdrawn at the time of mahaapralayam. Just like the way the minute aatma has the strength to carry the body obtained by it, the paramaatma has the strength to carry the whole universe withdrawn into Him. Hence, He is called sarvagah

"sarvaan gachchateeti."

nama no. 125) sarvavit (सर्ववित) (సర్వవిత్)
om sarvavide namah  (ओं सर्वविदे नमः)  (ఓం సర్వవిదే నమః)
The forthcoming two namas sarvavit and bhaanuh explain the abilities of Lord Vishnu to recreate all the objects withdrawn as per the earlier namas. 

The nama sarvavit means that He is able to recover the whole universe by recreating it after the mahapralayam. 

nama no. 126) (bhaanuh) (भानुः) (భానుః)
om  namah  (ओं भानवे नमः)  (ఓం భానవే నమః)
As He continues to shine with same glow without any change in Him though he built the unlimited universe, He is called bhaanuh.

nama no. 127) vishvaksenah (विष्वक्सेनः) (విష్వక్సేనః)
om  namah  (ओं विष्वक्सेनाय नमः)  (ఓం విష్వక్సేనాయ నమః)
vishvak means everywhere; and sena means 'the thing which has a protector giving it a protection.' We are all like a sena to the paramaatma, like a family protected by Him.

As He has such senas, families protected by Him everywhere, He is called vishvaksena. In essence, he is the all-protector. Such a capability of giving protection is called the 'power.'

nama no. 128) janaardhanah (जनार्दनः) (జనార్దనః)
om janaardanaaya namah  (ओं जनार्दनाय नमः)  (ఓం జనార్దనాయ నమః)
The earlier nama 'vishvaksena' revealed that the paramaatma has the POWER to protect all the people in His Parivaar. This nama janaardanah should be seen in that context. As He protects His devotees from all the evil forces, He is called janaardanah.

To destroy such evil forces, the paramaatma does not need any one's help or any the support of the weapons. And that capability of Him over His enemies is called 'TEJASSU.'

nama no. 129) vedah (वेदः) (వేదః)
om vedaaya namah  (ओं वेदाय नमः)  (ఓం వేదాయ నమః)
And, He is called vedah as He blesses all the people with the knowledge of the vedas. 

He is thus called vedah as the people, who obtained the body and all the senses at the time of the creation, are getting the knowledge of the vedas also due to Him.  

nama no. 130) vedavit (वेदवित) (వేదవిత్)
om vedavide namah  (ओं वेदविदे नमः)  (ఓం వేదవిదే నమః)
The word vedavit reveals that the paramaatma, who taught the vedas to Brahma and all others, knows the meaning and essence of the vedas completely without any kind of doubt or illusion.

Because of this reason, the paramaatma became the first teacher.

nama no. 131) avyangah (अव्यंगाः) (అవ్యంగః)
om avyangaaya namah  (ओं अव्यंगाय नमः)  (ఓం అవ్యంగాయ నమః)
He is referred to as 'avyangah' as He made the vedas without any errors or deficiencies by forming their grammar, structure, etc.

vi + angah = vyangah, which means handicapped, deficient

As He does not have any handicaps or deficiencies, He is avyangah. Similarly, this nama avyangah revels that the paramaatma gave the vedas their grammar and structure in order to make them free from any deficiencies.

nama no. 132) vedaangah (वेदांगः) (వేదాంగః)
om vedaangaaya namah  (ओं वेदांगाय नमः)  (ఓం వేదాంగాయ నమః)
The word 'anga' in this nama does not refer to any part as grammar etc., It means 'body' here.

As the vedas that are spread into unlimited branches are becoming His body (anga), He is called vedaangah

As the existence of the aatma is revealed by the body, the glory of the paramaatma is described by the vedas. Accordingly, the vedas are like the body of paramaatma. 

nama no. 133) vedavit (वेदवित) (వేదవిత్)
om vedavide namah  (ओं वेदविदे नमः)  (ఓం వేదవిదే నమః)
The word of 'vedas' relates to dharma as it is revealed by the vedas. Thus Lord Vishnu is called vedavit here as He keeps in His control the establishment of vedas, meaning the dharma.

Thats why He has His name also as DHARMA.

nama no. 134) kavih (कविः) (కవిః)
om kavaye namah  (ओं कवये नमः)  (ఓం కవయే నమః)
As paramaatma is 'kranthadarshi' he is called kavih.

In vedas, the word kavi is used to describe the one who is capable of seeing the meaning that is beyond the comprehension of the ordinary people. Kavis are the maharishis who know even the minute meanings.Those who write such words by thinking the deepest meanings are known as kavis.

Since paramaatma has such a capability of seeing completely the matters that are beyond the understanding of others, He is referred to with the nama kavih. 

om namo narayanaya.
