SLOKA NO 16) Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama Stotram


om namo bhagavate vaasudevaaya!

bhraajishnurbhojanam bhokta sahishnurjagadaadijah | 
anagho vijayo jetaa visvayonih punarvasuh ||
भ्राजिष्णुर्भोजनम् भोक्ता सहिष्णुर्जगदादिजः | 
अनघो विजयो जेता विश्वयोनिः पुनर्वसुः ||
భ్రాజిష్నుర్భోజనం భోక్తా సహిష్నుర్జగదాదిజః | 
అనఘో విజయో జేతా విశ్వయోనిః పునర్వసుః ||

This 16th sloka of VSNS has 10 names of lord Vishnu. The list of the names and their meanings are presented below:



143) bhraajishnuh (भ्राजिष्णुः) (భ్రాజిష్నుః)
144) bhojanam (भोजनं) (భోజనం)  
145) bhoktaa (भोक्ता) (భోక్తా)
146) sahishnuh (सहिष्णुः) (సహిష్నుః)
147) jagadaadijah (जगदादिजः) (జగదాదిజః)
148) anaghah (अनघः) (అనఘః)
149) vijayah (विजयः) (విజయః)
150) jetaa (जेता) (జేతా)
151) visvayonih (विश्वयोनिः) (విశ్వయోనిః)
152) punarvasuh (पुनर्वसुः) (పునర్వసుః)

nama no. 143) bhraajishnuh (भ्राजिष्णुः) (భ్రాజిష్నుః)
om bhraajishnave namah  (ओं भ्राजिष्णवे नमः)  (ఓం భ్రాజిష్నవే నమః)
As referred in the earlier namas, Lord Vishnu attains several roopas and blesses His devotees His divine appearance. Hence, He is called bhraajishnuh. It means that He presents His glowing appearance to those worshipping Him.

nama no. 144) bhojanam (भोजनं) (భోజనం)
om bhojanaaya namah  (ओं भोजनाया नमः)  (ఓం భోజనాయ నమః)
He doesn't disappear just after presenting His appearance (darshan). He makes them experience the happiness by displaying His divine traits of swaroopa, roopa, and others. 

Just as bhojanam results in happiness, the experience of paramaatma also leads to happiness. Hence, the name bhojanam

bhojanam also means the one who is experienced and enjoyed. 

nama no. 145) bhoktaa (भोक्ता) (భోక్తా)
om bhoktre namah  (ओं भोक्त्रे नमः)  (ఓం భోక్త్రే నమః)
He also treats all the offerings (pooja materials) of His devotees as divine nectar and enjoys them, he is called bhokta.

nama no. 146) sahishnuh (सहिष्णुः) (సహిష్నుః)
om sahishnave namah  (ओं सहिष्णवे नमः)  (ఓం సహిష్నవే నమః)
This nama sahishnu reveals that Lord Vishnu has the nature of tolerating and forgiving the mistakes of His devotees that have been accumulated day by day as committed by them consciously or unconsciously, before and after taking to Him.

nama no. 147) jagadaadijah (जगदादिजः) (జగదాదిజః)
om jagadaadijaaya namah  (ओं जगदादिजाया नमः)  (ఓం జగదాదిజాయ నమః)
This nama jagadaadijah proves that He is the one who appeared as Vishnu, the one at the centre of the three aadipurushaas - Brahma, Vishnu, and MaheSwara.

It means that He was born as one among the trinitiy - brahma, vishnu, and maheswara - who were the root source of all the creation. 

nama no. 148) anaghah (अनघः) (అనఘః)
om anaghaaya namah  (ओं अनघाया नमः)  (ఓం అనఘాయ నమః)
Thus, this nama anaghah tells us that though He took the form/roopa of Vishnu in the nature's system, He is untouched by any doshas or sins.

anaghah means the one devoid of any sin. 

nama no. 149) vijayah (विजयः) (విజయః)
om vijayaaya namah  (ओं विजयाय नमः)  (ఓం విజయాయ నమః)
As stated in the earlier namas that He is one among the trimurtis (Brahma, Vishnu, MaheSwara), one may wonder if He is equal to others. But this nama vijayah clears that doubt.

Both Brahma and Rudra are dictated by the karma. They are also created and again destroyed at the time of mahapralaya. Unlike them, the paramaatma is a winner. That doesn't mean that He destroys everyone. It only means that He keeps everything in His control. He is above all without surrendering to any one.

Only He has this power among the trimurtis. 

nama no. 150) jetaa (जेता) (జేతా)
om jeatre namah  (ओं जेतरे नमः)  (ఓం జేత్రే  నమః)
He won over them too. He has become jetaa as He has also punished them and brought them under His control.

It could be noted during the avatar of Krishna, when Brahma makes the cows of gokul disappear, Krishna brings them back, and Brahma realizes his mistake and praises Krishna. Similarly, when Shiva comes forward to protect BaaNaasura and gets defeated, he pleads for the protection of his devotee.

nama no. 151) visvayonih (विश्वयोनिः) (విశ్వయోనిః)
om viSvayoanave namah  (ओं विश्वयोनये नमः)  (ఓం విశ్వయోనయే నమః)
He is called viSvayonih as He is the cause of the entire universe created by that brahma and rudra in the srishTi.

As revealed through the earlier namas that the paramaatma attributed the capabilities of creation and destruction to brahma and rudra, and also kept them under his control, and getting the activities in the brahmanDa done through them, this nama viSvayonih further highlights that He is all independent.

nama no. 152) punarvasuh (पुनर्वसुः) (పునర్వసుః)
om punarvasave namah  (ओं पुनर्वसवे नमः)  (ఓం పునర్వసవే నమః)
He is called punarvasuh as He resides as an antaraatma in the hearts of branhma, rudra, and other devatas.

He does not send His instructions to those devatas by staying at a far away place. He resides very closely in their hearts, even without their knowledge.
